Have you ever wondered why food cooked over an open fire tastes so much better? There is an undeniable magic to it. The subtle smokiness, the perfect char, and the way the meat stays incredibly tender—it’s an art form that has been perfected over thousands of years.
At Lezzet Turkish Kitchen, we bring that [authentic charcoal grill experience] straight to the heart of Cardiff. Today, we are taking a quick trip back in time to look at how a simple nomadic cooking style became the crown jewel of Turkish cuisine.

Born Around the Campfire
Long before there were modern kitchens or fancy restaurants, the ancestors of Turkish cuisine lived a nomadic lifestyle across Central Asia. They were constantly on the move, which meant their cooking equipment had to be simple, portable, and efficient.
The solution? Soldiers and nomads would use their swords to skewer pieces of seasoned meat and cook them directly over open campfires. This simple, rugged method locked in all the juices and created an incredible smoky flavour that kept everyone fueled for the journey.
Later, when these traditions reached the grand kitchens of the Ottoman Palace, royal chefs took this campfire technique and elevated it to a culinary masterpiece, experimenting with fine spices and melting cheeses.
The Sizzle on St Mary Street
Today, we don't use swords in our kitchen, but we keep that ancient tradition alive with our authentic charcoal grill. When meat hits our glowing coals, it creates that unmistakable, mouth-watering sizzle.
If you want to taste this history yourself, you absolutely have to try our Cızbız Köfte. We take minced lamb or chicken, perfectly season it with traditional herbs, and blend it with melting cheddar cheese before letting the charcoal flame do its magic. Served with fluffy rice and a fresh salad, it is a proper medieval feast reimagined for a modern Cardiff lunch or dinner.

A Proper Lush Feast Awaits
You don't need to travel across continents or through time to experience the authentic taste of the Mediterranean campfire.
Pop down to St Mary Street this week, follow the amazing aroma drifting from our kitchen, and enjoy a meal that is packed with history and flavour.
